40th Jubilee Epilogue

The Los Verdes Men's and Women' Golf Clubs celebrated 40 years of great golf at our great course on October 16. The event was very well attended, and a grand time was had by all.

Among the many highlights to the evening, was a somewhat nostalgic and extremely interesting reminiscence by the only person to hold membership in both of our clubs, Len Kennett. His stories helped remind us of the hard work and strong relationships that have made our clubs so great. We also heard good things from Mike McGonegal, assistant director of golf for LA County Parks and Recreation, and from Dr. John Goode, the 1967 Men's Club President as well as their first club champion. Mike Gin, deputy to Supervisor Don Knabe, presented Presidents Marion Levander and Chris Vassallo a scroll commemorating our 40 years of service to golf and our community from the County Board of Supervisors extolling the accomplishments and virtues of our clubs.

Featuring a marvelous slide show reaching back over the 40 years of our existence, the presentation of memorabilia from our clubs brought back memories from the many charter members in attendance. The mood of the evening was perfectly defined by the wonderful music of Al Apodaca as well as the beauty of a candle lit banquet room, a wonderful meal, and the company of so many, many, good friends. We danced, reminisced, and truly enjoyed the celebration.

We all appreciate the efforts of the 40th Jubilee committee for making this an event and an evening to remember.

2004 Los Verdes Club Champion - Lew Murez

The 2004 Club Championship came to a close on June 13th and Lew Murez put his name on the trophy for the first time. The tournament started under foggy conditions and Rich Mouton put a scare in the field by starting the tournament birdie – birdie for the early lead. However, when the fog lifted it was Lew who took an opening day lead with a tournament low round of 72 including a two under 33 on the back nine. Bob Popeney had 75 to finish day one in second place. Day two played tough as the wind that affected all four days caused the scores to balloon. Chris Ratay and Tom Goode were low men of the day with 76’s. Lew followed up with a 78 to remain in the lead by 4 over Bob Acosta, Kim Bucci and George Francisco and 5 over Goode and Glen Itow.

Glen Itow was serious on day three and started birdie – birdie and opened with a 2 under 34 on the front and pulled within one of the lead. Lew calmly shot a 74 and finished the day with what most thought was a secure seven-stroke lead. The battle for second place was shaping up as 4 strokes separated the next 7 players including the ever-dangerous Ben Serns. On day four, Kim Bucci showed that he wanted the victory as he had three birdies on the front on his way to a 37 while Lew stumbled to a 41 and the lead was only 3 with 9 holes to play. Lew righted the ship with birdies on 11 and 12 and cruised in with a 38 on the back to win by 6 shots of George Francisco and 7 over Kim Bucci.

There were many new faces in the field this year and it looks as if the Club Championship will be fiercely contested in the future. The field of 19 had 8 new participants from last year including George Francisco and Bob Acosta finishing 2nd and 3rd and Carlos Tamayo in 8th and Bob Popeney in 9th. If newcomer Alan Nakamura could have gotten some putts to fall, he would have been in contention as well.

The final results show just how close the competition was for the top 7 spots. It looks as if Lew will have some tough competitors when he defends next year. Congratulations to all.
